Matters of the Heart

I care deeply about this community that four generations of my family have called home.  My grandfather, Peter Leslie, arrived in Nelson from Scotland in the 1920s and began work on the Corra Linn Dam.  He met my grandmother, Dorothea, while travelling through the prairies.  She soon joined him in Nelson where they were married and raised their family of five. My grandfather worked as a Captain at the Nelson Fire Dept. and many long-time residents will remember two businesses that he started – Snappy Service and Leslie’s Fire Equipment.  He was also a founding member of the Kootenay Kilties.  When he retired he was an employee of the City of Nelson.

Their oldest daughter, my mother Margaret Howe, still resides in Nelson.  She raised her family of four here.

My husband, Roger, has worked at L.V. Rogers High School for the past 17 years.  He has been the manager of the L.V. Roger's senior boys soccer team for many years.  We have been married for 30 years and have raised our family here Â– Cameron, Kristin and Erin.

All young adults now - Cam lives in Nelson and works full-time at Safeway; Kristin has a degree in kinesiology and teaching from UBC and is currently working in a private high school in China.  She hopes to live and work in Nelson in the future.  Our youngest daughter Erin is currently travelling in Thailand and will return to Nelson in the new year.  My son Kevin, his wife Brandee and my 8 month old grandson, Jack,  live in Vancouver.
